Thanks to Mike’s instructions, I compiled a NetCenter firmware (R1.1.0.0003.E023) myself with the busybox telnetd service enabled by default. I tried to keep the changes as minimal as possible.

Some of the changes I made to the stock firmware (R1.1.0.0003)

removed extra languages from web interface.
updated vsftpd from v2.01 to v2.05.
added symlink /opt -> /shares/Main/__opt (don't rename the Main volume!)
added symlink /etc/rc.start -> /opt/etc/rc.start (user start script).
added symlink /etc/profile -> /opt/etc/profile
added busybox applets: dmesg, env, false, find, hostname, id, login, netstat, passwd, reset, sed, stty, telnetd, top, traceroute, uname, vi, which, xargs

In case you want to disable telnetd, enter the following line:

nvram set telnetd_enable=0 ; nvram commit

Holding the reset button for 10 seconds will skip rc.start and re-enable telnet. The skip of rc.start is only once, and right after the reset. You can, of course, change what ever you want with rc.start. If there’s something vital missing, let me know.

The use of this modified WD-NetCenter firmware is done at your own risk (!)

Thanks for the telnet firmware, I'ld like to get both vsftp and telnet. I think this will come soon :-)

Also extension of busybox is great.

After installing the FW I tried to login, I used login and password from the info text on the download page. However login was failing, please repeat login data.

I did two things wrong:
1. I did not supply the user start script
2. the default password WD-... was not working, reason unclear, however I created an entry for root without password in shadow from start script.
By this login telnet and vsftp was now accessible and I could change the password by passwd command.

Gratulations to epias for this great release, but perhaps it would make more sense if Mike and epias worked together - or at least exchanged ideas - so that there will only be one open_firmware.

I've got a problem with epias Telnet enabled Firmware: the auto-spin-down function won't work. The disk run's all the time.

I've tried with standard start options (without twonky!).

Have anybody else this problem? Can it be solved?

Thank you for your replay. But i'm sorry - my NetCenter won't spin down with your settings too. I'm using a HUB - maybe there is some traffic which keeps the NetCenter Disk up. I'll check this and may post if i've got an answer or a solution.

Last but not least: TorrentClient
I never tried this out. But there are some ipkg-packages for Torrent. Look at http://ipkg.openmss.org/unslung/packages or at http://ipkg.openmss.org/experimental/packages for a complete list.

To acid-mic: The last connector (number 4 or 8 or 16 or 24) is used to expand/connect with other hub. On switch is this same. On this connector connect not the Netcenter.
Do not use Hub, Hub work as a repeater. If you share Netcenter with more PC/devices the transfer speed get down and the LAN connenction get overflow(the hub send packets to all connected devices).
Use a switch, switch send packet to only one device not to all.

wir können die Unterhaltung gerne auf deutsch weiterführen - englisch ist nicht so ganz meine Stärke!

Das NetCenter hängt nicht auf dem Uplink-Port des Routers, welcher außerdem auch nicht geschalten ist (3Com hat hier einen extra Schalter in die Hubs eingebaut).

Einen Switch möchte ich mir eh zulegen, aber meine letzte Anschaffung war das NetCenter ... nun muss ich erstmal nächstes Monat bzw. meinen nächsten Lohn abwarten.

Ich habe mit WireShark ein wenig gesniffert (einzigster Vorteil mit einem Hub! lol) - mein noxon 2 audio frägt an ob der Server noch bzw. wieder verfügbar ist. Ich habe den Noxon nämlich dabei ertappt, wie er kurzzeitig - im Standby-Betrieb (trotz verdunkeltem Display) - eine Connection Lost Meldung zeigt. Genau zu diesem Zeitpunkt springt auch WireShark an und meldet die entsprechenden EchoReplay Pakete des Twonky Servers. Der noxon ist per WLAN verbunden.

Ich vermute nun das es an meinen beiden WLAN Access Points liegen könnte (DLink DWL-2100AP), welche sich im WDS-Mode (Wireless Distribution System) miteinander "unterhalten". Hintergrund-Info: Ich möchte kein Kabel (mehr) vom 1. Stock in das Erdgeschoß ziehen. Deshalb die 2x AP Lösung, welche für den noxon und gelegentliches INet-Surfen im Wohnzimmer völlig ausreichen (sieht auch schicker aus -> Frauenfaktor!).

Evtl. weiß der noxon nach einiger Zeit (etwa 10 bis 15 Minuten) nicht mehr, mit welchem AP er sich nun verbinden soll. Danach dann die Anfrage: Ist irgendwo ein Twonky Server?

Wenn ich mit dem noxon Internetradio direkt empfange schaltet das NetCenter die Platte ordnungsgemäß ab - was diese Theorie bestätigt. Leider hatte ich seither keine Zeit mehr um mich mit der Problematik weiter zu befassen.

Da wir nun ja OffTopic sind und außerdem das ganze womöglich ein spezielles Problem aufgrund meiner Netzwerkstruktur ist möchte ich das Thema hier nicht weiter vertiefen.

Solltest Du noch andere Anregungen haben oder jemand anders noch das gleiche Problem haben können wir einen eigenen Threat aufmachen bzw. per PM kommunizieren.
